Why You Should Wear Jeans On April 29th.

The world has proclaimed April 29th “Denim Day” and we are encouraging everyone to wear jeans on Denim Day to remind others about harmful attitudes toward sexual assault and to communicate the message “There is no excuse and never an invitation to rape.”

The Denim Day movement began in Italy after a court overturned a rape conviction because, the court opined, since the victim had been wearing tight jeans, she must have helped the rapist remove her jeans, therefore giving him consent. The day after the decision, women in the Italian Parliament protested by wearing jeans and holding placards that read “Jeans: An Alibi for Rape.”

This caused a dramatic call to action which motivated the California Senate and Assembly to follow suit, and when word of the protest reached Patricia Giggans, Executive Director of Peace Over Violence, Denim Day in LA was born in April 1999 and has continued every year since. Wearing jeans on Denim Day has become an internationally recognized symbol of protest against outdated and destructive misconceptions about sexual assault.
